The scent from a fresh Christmas tree during the holidays captures the true feel and excitement of the best time of year. Christmas decorating sometimes begins on the day after Thanksgiving and can remain up all the way into the next year. So getting the most out of your live tree to ensure it is thoroughly enjoyed for the duration of the season is essential.
Types of Trees:
• Balsam Fir - These are considered to be the traditional Christmas tree with their deep green, soft needles and known for their scent and shape.
• Fraser Fir - A very popular choice among tree enthusiasts. They have excellent needle retention, strong branches and a pleasant fragrance.
• Blue Fir - A unique double needle look and blue-green color make this tree a rising star. They also have great needle retention and a strong scent.
Tree Care:
• First, make sure you have chosen a live tree stand that holds at least a gallon of water and a tree removal bag to protect your floor and also makes for an easy cleanup at the end of the season.
• If you are not ready to set up your tree right away; store in a sheltered, unheated area, such as a garage. Also keep the trunk immersed in water to prevent sap forming over the stump. This will block the tree from absorbing water.
• Place the tree removal bag down first and then the stand and tree. Don't forget to fill the stand with water.
• Make sure water doesn't drop below the base of the tree. It only takes 4-6 hours for dried sap to seal over the stump.
• Keep in mind your tree will absorb a gallon or more water in the first 24 hours and a quart or more per day afterwards.
• Adding tree preservatives to the water will also help keep your tree looking fresher and smelling great longer.
Now that you have the fundamentals of tree care down; pick up your favorite species with confidence.
Happy Holidays!
