October is the prime time to grab a firepit and chill outside. Here are some things to know.
Protecting your Firepit
A little known trick is to keep a thin layer of sand and lava rocks on the bottom of the pit. This prevents heat-related damage to the bowl since the sand acts as a natural insulator.
Keep your firepit covered when not in use and keep it dry. This will eliminate the metal from rusting or corroding.
Did you know sage is a natural barrier against mosquitoes?
Burning sage emits a pleasant aroma to us, but quite the opposite to insects—they actually hate it. Think about growing this flavorful and aromatic herb in your garden and then toss a bundle into your fire. It's a win-win-win. Wait— Sage-infused roasted marshmallows...?
Best Fire-burning Wood
Try using Kiln dried firewood for a cleaner burn and longer lasting fire. The reason for this is the low moisture content from the 4+ hours drying process at 250 degrees.
Ashes, Ashes...
Here are three top reasons to save the ashes.
The potassium salts found in wood ash acts as an environmentally friendly de-icer for driveways and walkways.
Add the ash to your garden. It contains essential nutrients, including that potassium, to help plants grow and keep them healthy. It also improves the ph level of soil.
Lastly, common garden pests, such as snails and slugs, will avoid any trace of ash; leaving your garden free and clear.
