End of Year Home Checklist

December marks the end of yet another year, and most of us will be all too happy to see 2020 fade into yesteryear. As we maintain the hope for a far better 2021; we also have to maintain our home with this end of the year checklist.

Interior:

  • Inspect caulk around bathtubs, sinks, and toilets to ensure moisture is not seeping into the walls and floor.
  • Inspect ceilings for damp spots, mildew, discoloration, cracks or bulges. These could be signs of a hidden leak.
  • Check around windows for water or ice buildup.
  • Remove dust from range hood and fridge coils.
  • Clean/service heating systems and replace filters (we covered this in our September blog).
  • Check fireplace and chimney, if there is more than 1/8" thick creosote buildup; it is recommended to have it professionally cleaned to prevent a fire.
  • Replace bad weather-stripping around windows and doors.
  • Cover in-wall air conditioners.
  • Shut off water to exterior faucets and hose.

Exterior:

  • Check roof for missing shingles.
  • Check soffit and fascia for rotting wood.
  • Clean gutters and downspouts.
  • Touch-up flaking paint.
  • Ensure siding and foundation are free of cracks.
  • Repair outside steps and railings.
  • Trim trees, shrubs and perennials. This can prevent damage caused by snow buildup and also allows a better growth in the spring.
  • Ensure leaves are not covering storm sewer openings.
  • Patch worn sections of your driveway.
  • Have a shovel and salt or sand easily accessible.
